A new edition of the Baladi Immersion – a 10-week course for autumn of 2024!
This course was first presented in 2022 and was much appreciated. The 2024 edition contains the main elements of the initial course but also new material & findings.
The course explores Baladi-style dance & music, the concept of Baladi in Egyptian culture, and the various aspects of ”Baladi” dance from Raqs Baladi as social dancing to the adaptations made for stage.
Technique-wise we will find our way into the grounded hipwork of Baladi-style dance, and the graceful & relaxed flow of movement.
While exploring the music, from ca the 1950’s and onward we will try out expression ranging from the heavy, soft, lingering to the extrovert, playful and sassy.
In this journey we also encounter the two archetypes of the Bint Al Balad (girl of the country) and the Maalimah (boss lady).
IMPROVISATION is a core part of this dance, and also of the course. Annah will offer guidance & space for exploration both for you who haven’t improvised before and for you who want to go further in your improvisation skills.
